Top tips for employers when hosting the staff Christmas party

I set out below some tips to help employers reduce their risk before the staff party, as well as ensuring that employees understand the consequences of their conduct:

The general principle is that the staff Christmas party is an extension of the employment relationship. This can mean that an employer is legally responsible, and financially liable, for the conduct of its staff whilst at the Christmas party, such as acts of sexual harassment or fighting - to name but two of the more common incidents.

An employer may also find that they are liable for their own acts and omissions, such as failing to eliminate discrimination in the organisation of the event.
